Gavin and Kelly capture the 2009 100 Plus Malaysian Junior Title |
Malaysian players are certainly formidable in the 100Plus Malaysian Junior Open by winning the first, second and third places in the Boy's Overall Division, first place in the Girl's Division and Juniors Under 11 Division.
PENANG (AUG 13, 2009): Gavin Kyle Green and Kelly Tan helped Malaysia to their most successful 100PLUS Malaysian Junior Open when they won the overall titles in the boys' and girls' categories at Bukit Jawi Golf Resort today.
The duo, who also helped Malaysia win their first ever team crown yesterday, also took home the top prize in the Under-16 division. This marks the first time in history that Malaysian have swept all the main titles.
Gavin emulated Akhmal Tarmizi Nazari's 2007 feat of becoming the boys' overall winner while Kelly is the first Malaysian girl to take home the 100PLUS Malaysian Junior Open girls' overall title.
Both golfers entered the final day one stoke behind the leaders but kept their cool through two rain delays to outdo their peers from 11 countries to claim a sensational double for Malaysia.
Gavin carded a final round score of one-over 73 to finish with a three-day total of one-under 215 for a five-stroke victory over compatriot Abel Tam, who finished with a seven-over 79.
Kelly, who needed to birdie the last hole to claim victory, coolly putted from two feet after a great approach shot on the par-five 18th to set up a one-stroke win over Thai girls Suchaya Tangkamolpraset and Paveenuch Sritagul. Kelly finished with a three-day total of nine-over 225 after her even par-72 today.
"The two stoppages because of the rain didn't help calm my nerves but I managed to stay focus after taking the lead after the first nine. It is good to be back in the winner's circle after three months and this win will inspire me for the Putra Cup next week," said Gavin, who had four titles going into this competition.
"It is indeed a great honour for me win this event as it is the biggest junior tournament in the country."
Kelly, meanwhile, kept her promise to keep the 100PLUS Malaysian Junior Open trophy in the country.
"I didn't know I had to birdie the last hole to win the tournament. I just concentrated on making my shots and didn't pay much attention to the leader board," said Kelly, who earned her second title of the year, seven months after winning the Selangor Ladies Amateur Open.
"It has been pretty much an up and down event as I didn't have a great second round but bounced back to win today. I'm glad to have kept the promise I made to myself to be the first Malaysian girl to win the 100PLUS Malaysian Junior Open title and now, I hope to do something no one has done before, to go on and win this event for three consecutive years."
The 100PLUS Malaysian Junior Open Golf tournament is among several junior programmes that 100PLUS supports in the country. 100PLUS is also the main sponsor for the 100PLUS Super Cup Champions Schools Programme (a nationwide football competition for Under-18 age-groups), the 100PLUS National Junior Badminton Circuit and the Minister of Education Football League.
100PLUS, also a sponsor of the Maybank Malaysian Open this year and for Asian Tour events in Malaysia, is recommended by the National Sports Council.
